The term that refers to the thermal insulation within the building enclosure.
THERMAL
ENVELOPE
Holes in the thermal insulation of your house can result in high utility bills. The picture to the right shows typical places that air leaks into and out of a house.
Since you can't see air, how do you know where your air leaks are? How do you know how leaky your house is? Can your house be too air tight?
These are all questions that can be answered by a home

energy audit.

Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. For example, in winter heat flows from your heated living space to outside. In summer, heat flows from outside into your air conditioned space. Insulation is designed to decrease the movement of heated air into or out of your house. It can only reduce the movement of air within the space that it occupies
Spray foam polyurethane insulation such as Icynene or Demilec is a revolutionary insulation material you may not be familiar with. It is a foam that is applied as a liquid and expands to 100 times its initial voulme, sealing even tiny cracks and crevices, and eliminating air leaks.
When you need insulation there are quite a few choices to consider. You are probably familiar with the traditional types of insulation like batts, blankets, and loose fill or blown-in insulation.

Most homes in Georgia are under-insulated. Georgia Building Code calls for R-30 in attics which is about 12" of fiberglass insulation.

Attic Stair Insulation Cap
The attic access is one of the biggest deficiencies in the thermal barrier between the attic and the living area. Adding an attic cap is one easy way to help reduce heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.
Adding insulation to your house could improve your utility bills up to 20%.
What about windows?
Are your old windows drafty and constantly leaking conditioned air out of your house? If so, now may be the time to up-grade them.
New Energy Star windows qualify for a 10% tax credit with a cap of $200 until 12/31/2011. (some restrictions may apply)
Insulation qualifies for a federal tax credit up to $500 until 12/31/2011 (some restrictions may apply)
