1) My air conditioner or heat pump is not blowing cold air or my a/c is blowing, but it is not blowing cold air.
2) My air conditioner or heat pump has ice on it, or my air conditioner is frozen up, or my air a/c has ice on the pipes, or my evaporator coil has ice on it or is frozen.
The air that is blowing in your house is created by the blower in your furnace or air handler. The fan can be blowing inside your house, but the air conditioner that is outside may not be turning on at all. If the outdoor fan is running but the compressor is not turning on, then you need to turn the unit off and call a professional to check your system. Several different things could be wrong. One of the most common problems we find in the Atlanta area is a bad capacitor or bad contactor that will not let the compressor turn on. The best way to keep your air conditioner working properly is to have regular maintenance twice a year so that small things can be caught before they become big, expensive problems.
If your air conditioner, heat pump or coil has ice on it or is frozen up, you should turn your air conditoner off and get it checked by a professional because it may be low on refrigerant. The two most common causes for an air conditioner to freeze up are: 1) lack of air flow or 2) low on refrigerant. If it is low on refrigerant or FREON/PURON it can cause your a/c to freeze up and if you continue to run it, you may damage your expensive air conditioner compressor. A frozen up air conditioner needs to be checked by a professional.
