DUCT LEAKAGE TEST
WHY IS DUCT LEAKAGE IMPORTANT?
Leaks in residential forced air duct systems are a major source of energy waste in both new and existing houses. Studies by the US Dept.of Energy show that duct leakage can account for as much as 25% to 40% of the heating & cooling efficiency of your HVAC system, and in many cases has a greater impact on energy use than air leaks from your doors and windows. Also, duct leakage can prevent heating and cooling systems from doing their job properly, resulting in rooms that are too hot or too cold, excessive dust, humidity problems, and high utility bills. Even worse, duct leaks can create indoor air quality problems by pulling pollutants such as dust, mold, insulation, and other irritants directly into the house.
DOES ANYONE IN YOUR HOUSE SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES OR ASTHMA?
... duct leaks can create indoor air quality problems by pulling pollutants such as dust, mold, insulation, and other irritants directly into the house.
Leaks in the supply ductwork cause expensive conditioned air to be blown into the attic, crawlspace or garage instead of into the house resulting in excessive utility bills.
ARE YOU PAYING TO HEAT & COOL YOUR ATTIC OR BASEMENT?
Return duct leaks pull outside air into the duct system reducing both efficiency and capacity. In humid climates, like Georgia, humidity drawn into return leaks can overwhelm the dehumidification capacity of the air conditioner or heat pump resulting in homes that feel clammy even when the air conditioner is running.
Duct leaks on heat pump systems can cause the conditioned air coming from heat pumps to feel luke-warm or even cold during the winter. In addition, leaky ductwork can greatly increase the use of electric strip heaters in heat pumps during the heating season, causing the electric bill to skyrocket.
Household depressurization from duct leaks and imbalanced duct systems can draw carbon monoxide from the furnace, water heater, or fireplace into the house.

HOW DUCT LEAKAGE IS MEASURED
A duct leakage, or duct performance test, involves pressurizing the duct system with a calibrated fan and then using instruments that measure the air flow through the fan and its effect on the pressure in the duct system. The tighter the duct system, the less air you need from the fan to create the desired duct system pressure. Sophisticated duct leakage testing equipment, like the Duct Pressure Testing Equipment pictured at the top of the page, is used to take measurements and diagnose leakage problems, estimate the efficiency loss from duct leakage, and certify the quality of the duct system installation.

Air leaks in your duct systems are like hidden bandits that rob your of your energy efficiency and drive your energy bills up. Air is invisible so without some help from specilized testing equipment, you will not be able to detect if you have leaks or their magnitude.
Georgia finally addresses air leakage problem in duct systems!
Georgia has finally addressed the duct leakage problems in residential as well as commercial buildings by updating and improving the building codes to include standards for the amount of duct leakage allowable. This is great going forward for new construction, but what about your house? Your house was most likely built when there were no such standards or controls in place and most likely you have air leaks in your duct system. The only way to know is to get your house tested. Cool Max can perform a duct leakage test analysis to identify areas of energy waste in your duct system. Call today to schedule your test...starting at $299.
