1) My furnace or heat pump will not come on. My furnace blower will not come on.
If your furnace or heat pump will not come on the first thing to do is check the thermostat. Make sure the settings are set on the "Heat" mode. Also make sure that the temperature setting is higher than the room temperature. If the thermostat is not responding, you might check to see if the batteries in your thermostat need replacing. (Not all thermostats require batteries.) If your thermostat does not seem to be the problem, check your electrical panel and make sure none of the breakers have been tripped. The next thing to check is the safety on/off switch located near the furnace. In most cases it looks like a light switch. Make sure it is in the on position. Another thing to check is to make sure the door to the furnace on closed properly. If you have to open the door to change the filter and you do not close it properly, it will not allow the furnace to turn on. If you have a heat pump, then check the disconnect box outside and make sure it is on.

Frozen Heat Pump
2) My pilot light will not come on or my burners will not fire up.
Once again, start with your thermostat. Make sure it is in "Heat" mode or set to auto. If the thermostat gets changed to "fan on" and the temperature setting is not higher than the room temperature, the fan will blow, but the heat will not turn on. Most late mode furnaces have electronic lighters for the gas and do not have a standing pilot light.
3) My heat pump is frozen up or my heat pump has ice on it.
If your heat pump looks like the one in the picture, cut your system off and call a service technician to come service your unit. Several things can cause this to happen. Two of the most common causes are 1) low on refrigerant, or 2) faulty defrost control board.
4) My heat pump is blowing cold air.
A heat pump puts out less heat than a gas furnace. If the outdoor temperature is 30 degrees, then the heat pump system may put out around 92 degree air. On the other hand, a furnace will typically put out between 130 to 140 degrees. On really cold days, the heat pump will require emergency heat or electric heat strips to supplement heat. If the air feels cold, the best thing to do is to get a thermometer and check to see what the actual temperature is. Your heat pump serves as your air conditioner in the summer months, so check your thermostat to make sure it is in heating mode and not cooling mode. If the thermostat is on the proper settings and cold air is still blowing, then call Cool Max to schedule a service technician to come see what is wrong.
